Ava DuVernay, producer and director, achieved the promise instigated by Regina King at the Golden Globes, to make future projects fifty percent women. Ms. King challenged those in positions of power to stand in solidarity and Ms. DuVernay answered successfully. Her new project with the OWN Network, Oprah Winfrey Network, “Cherish the Day”, includes eighteen department heads behind the scenes. She not only hired females, she also gave women leadership positions.

“Cherish the Day” production crew stats surpass the average of twenty percent on sets and only eight percent of directors, as per the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University. The study confirmed thirty one percent of employment were women based on tracking of five thousand behind the scene credits and five hundred films from 9/2018–5/2019.

Ms. DuVernay’s new creation, “Cherish the Day”, is a romantic drama premiering in Winter 2020. It stars Cicely Tyson, Gently James and Alano Miller. The eight episodes, based in Los Angeles, will feature the young couple falling in love over a five year period.
