New York Fashion Week ended a month ago and most of the runway shows are now a blurred memory, except for one. Nonie, designed by Nina Kharey, a Canadian based, ready to wear clothing line was the most unforgettable. Her collection wasn’t over the top, colorful or featured models that were the trend of the moment. In a season filled with colors, bright patterns, color blocking, extreme shoulders and streetwear, Mrs. Kharey delivered breathtakingly classic looks, that floated down the Industria catwalk.
Nina Kharey, first generation Canadian and mother of two, is inspired by her parents immigration to Canada and her Indian heritage. You can see the influences in her well tailored, ethically produced fashion. Her garments are not fast fashion. They are meant to last a lifetime and worn for generations to come.
Nina became another Canadian designer favored by Megan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, when the newest member of the Royal Family wore the NONIE Trench Dress to the Nelson Mendela Centenary Exhibition at London’s Southbank Centre with Prince Harry. The “Meghan Effect”-anything that the Duchess wears gains exposure for the specific brand and usually sell out instantly-was palpable at the NONIE fashion house, after she looked like a bonafide style icon in the perfect trench dress.
